Sarah Glenn Marsh - Fear The Drowning Deep (I'm Eighteen #2)

ACK! Let's move on to Day Two of Nine!

I have totally skipped college to work today BUT I haven't done anything. I am SUCH a productive adult. (OH GOD I'M AN ADULT.)

I'm currently watching Grey's Anatomy as I write this post (which is only my favourite show in ever) but #irrelevant so welcome *cue opening music*

... Sarah Glenn Marsh whose BEAUTIFUL book, Fear the Drowning Deep, comes out October 4th from Sky Pony Press and she's here talking

1. 5 Of Your Favourite Foods:
Pizza, Ice Cream, Quiche, Pasta, Pancakes –Clearly, I’m the poster girl for healthy eating ;)

2. If you could collaborate with one author, who would it be?
I’d love to collaborate with the great Neil Gaiman, because I know I’d learn so much from him! He’s truly a master of his craft. The Graveyard Book is one of a very few stories to ever make me openly cry at the end!

3. Tell us about the day you found out you were getting published:
That day, I was at an event called FaerieCon (a gathering of fantasy authors, artists, and vendors and lots of folks in costume), heading into the ladies’ restroom, when I realized I had a voicemail from my agent asking me to call her. I gracefully (read: obnoxiously) shrieked, startling all the bathroom-going fairies, and ran to the hotel lobby where the event was taking place so I could call her back and hear the news in real time. Then I immediately called my husband and parents.

The whole night after hearing the news felt surreal. I remember it as a dazed, happy blur. Finally, someone appreciated my hard work. Finally, persisting in the face of so much rejection had paid off. I promptly took a picture of my happy-tired face so I could remember what it looks like when not giving up on your dreams pays off.

And now, moving onto your masterpiece:

4. What inspired you to write Fear the Drowning Deep?
The inspiration for Fear the Drowning Deep came from something I read in the news: an article about a rare shark that had been spotted by fishermen (near Japan, if I recall) and it got me thinking about all the strange creatures in the ocean. It seems to me that people spend more time wondering about space, looking up, than they do wondering about what’s in the waters below us--waydeep down, in the darkest places we can't see or reach...and the idea for Fear was born!

5. Give us a few songs that remind you of your book (or your writing playlist):
*You Brought Me Up by Méav- this song sets the tone for the book!
*Atlantis by Ellie Goulding
*When It Comes to Us by Frances (ft. Ritual)- a song for Bridey and Fynn
*Salt Skin by Ellie Goulding

*Full Fathom Five by Méav- this is a Shakespeare sonnet-turned-song with an eerie, siren-like quality that reminds me of the forbidding ocean

6. What is your opinion on negative reviews?
This is an interesting question! My thought on reviews—positive or negative—is that they’re for the readers, and so I don’t really get to have an opinion on them! I wrote a book I’m happy with, but the thing about publishing is, it’s now out of my hands, and it’s there for people to form their own opinions on, and I get no say in that! I mean, I sure do hope people like it, but I don’t think I get an opinion on reviews of my own work since they’re by readers, for readers!

Part of a Series?: Nope, A Standalone!
Blurb Description: Witch’s apprentice Bridey Corkill has hated the ocean ever since she watched her granddad dive in and drown with a smile on his face. So when a dead girl rolls in with the tide in the summer of 1913, sixteen-year-old Bridey suspects that whatever compelled her granddad to leap into the sea has made its return to the Isle of Man.
Soon, villagers are vanishing in the night, but no one shares Bridey’s suspicions about the sea. No one but the island’s witch, who isn’t as frightening as she first appears, and the handsome dark-haired lad Bridey rescues from a grim and watery fate. The cause of the deep gashes in Fynn’s stomach and his lost memories are, like the recent disappearances, a mystery well-guarded by the sea. In exchange for saving his life, Fynn teaches Bridey to master her fear of the water — stealing her heart in the process.
Now, Bridey must work with the Isle’s eccentric witch and the boy she isn’t sure she can trust — because if she can’t uncover the truth about the ancient evil in the water, everyone she loves will walk into the sea, never to return.
