BLOG TOUR: Ivory and Bone by Julie Eshbaugh - Review + Giveaway

Title: Ivory and Bone (Ivory and Bone #1)
Author: Julie Eshbaugh
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: June 7th 2016
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Romance, Retellings, Fiction
Synopsis: A prehistoric fantasy—with allusions to Pride and Prejudice.
Hunting, gathering, and keeping his family safe—that’s the life seventeen-year-old Kol knows. Then bold, enigmatic Mya arrives from the south with her family, and Kol is captivated. He wants her to like and trust him, but any hopes of impressing her are ruined when he makes a careless—and nearly grave—mistake. However, there’s something more to Mya’s cool disdain…a history wrought with loss that comes to light when another clan arrives. With them is Lo, an enemy from Mya’s past who Mya swears has ulterior motives.
As Kol gets to know Lo, tensions between Mya and Lo escalate until violence erupts. Faced with shattering losses, Kol is forced to question every person he’s trusted. One thing is for sure: this was a war that Mya or Lo—Kol doesn’t know which—had been planning all along.
“Every person who has ever lived has a story to tell.”
Before I talk to you about this book, I should warn you that it’s a love story. A profession of love from one to another, told in the following manner: “I saw you coming out from your tent” and “It was you in my thoughts and I couldn’t figure out why.”

I will also warn you that this book, for every dialogue, has about ten DEEP observations made without words. SERIOUSLY. All the emotions EVER, perceived in thought. This is also slow paced, and a love story filled with pining.

I would recommend you going into the book knowing this, because I didn’t and it took me quite by surprise. And it did take me a while to get over it. So, fair warning.

Now, I will say that once I did get over it, Ivory and Bone was this WHOLLY amazing, perfectly descriptive and detailed story. It was simple yet complicated, wonderful and different. Eshbaugh has perfected writing at its purest form, and wove a wonderful tale.

Kol is the eldest son of the Manu clan. He is followed by his brothers Pek, Kesh and Roon. Kol spends his days filled with a loneliness he can’t explain. Even in a crowded room, he feels alone. The boys are almost grown, which means it’s time to find a mate. After all, it is essential to keep the clan moving forward.

And then come two girls – Mya and Seeri. The two girls that will change their lives forever.

Ivory and Bone consists of subtly done, wondrously detailed friction between clans, and between lives in that time, and if you can acquire the taste, it’s a wonderful different kind young adult.

While I loved it, there were also certain words used very rarely like ‘cocky’ and ‘our hut like a tent’ (Perhaps ARC stuff?) that sort of ruined the ancient effect, but they were so rare in an extremely well done story that I mostly looked past them.

A 4 star read!
